 Olivia Rodrigo: Driver's License

With the massive amount of technology available to us today, it has become extremely common to see actors, actresses, musicians, comedians, and other major stars merge with their fans on social media. This can be an easy way for fans to feel like they are more connected to their favorite celebrities, and it can also be an easy way for stars to continue promoting their brands and new projects to a larger audience. Olivia Rodrigo did just that when she released her newest song, "Driver's License".

The 17 year old actress is commonly known by her roles in the Disney show called "Bizaardvark" and Disney Plus original series called "High School Musical: The Musical: The Series". Olivia has been singing since she was young, but the songs that most people know her by come from her acting credits, such as her hit song called "All I Want" from the Disney Plus phenomenon. However, Olivia released her own song that was not associated with Disney on January 8, 2021 called "Driver's License". To say the least, the song became an instant hit.

Within less than two weeks, Olivia's song hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart after having a record breaking week through streaming services like Spotify and Amazon Music. Throughout the first week, the hit song was streamed over 76 million times, surpassing the streaming numbers of artists such as Ariana Grande. "Driver's License" also set a daily record for most global streams of a non-holiday song on Spotify before breaking the music service's record of most global streams in a week. The New York Times reports that the song "reached No. 1 in 48 countries on Apple Music, 31 countries on Spotify and 14 countries on YouTube".

As the song continues to trend on social media sites such as Twitter and TikTok, many celebrities and fans are reaching out to congratulate and support Olivia on such a big accomplishment. I am a fan of Olivia Rodrigo seeing that I watch her on "High School Musical: The Musical: The Series" and I enjoy listening to the songs that she has released through the show. I definitely enjoy her latest song, though it does seem to me that a large part of her streams could come from people who are  more interested in the drama behind the song than the song itself.

Many people speculate that the song is about Olivia's costar Joshua Bassett who is a singer/songwriter himself. Though never confirmed, there was strong suspicion and signals that pointed to a relationship between the two celebrities around the time their show aired. It looked to be like a messy situation when they "broke up" and he moved on. Nonetheless, whether most of the song's success came from genuine interest in the song or the drama, I am a fan of both Olivia and "Driver's License" and will be excited to see where this fame takes her!
