 News of the World

    Tom Hanks is no stranger to the big screen or high rating movies, and the craziest that was 2020 did not stop him from continuing his career with another hit movie, News of the World. In the movie, Hanks plays a Civil War veteran, Jefferson Kyle Kidd, whose job is delivering news to towns around post-war Texas. While on his route one day, Kidd comes across an overturned cart where he finds a young girl, Helena Zengal, crouching behind it. The girl ends up being named Johanna and she is a white girl who was taken by Kiowa tribe when she was just a baby. The movie follows the pair traveling across Texas as Jefferson tries to find Johanna's family and get her home. 

    Kidd learns that Johanna is German and that she knows hardly any English at all. This heart-warming story is also extremely suspenseful and has a few action packed moments as well. The story gives glimpses into Jefferson Kyle Kidd's past and into his heart as he grows to be a protective guardian figure for Johanna. Regardless of the major age difference between the pair, one thing they both have in common is their struggle of identity. Kidd went from being a soldier in a gruesome war on the side of the Confederates to traveling the land alone seeing that he has no family to comfort him. Johanna has already been stripped from two families, German and Kiowa, at the exact time in her life when she should be developing her identity. 

     

     I personally loved this movie when I saw it, I even cried in the theaters. I am a longtime fan of Tom Hanks, as are most people, and I feel like this was the perfect movie to showcase the way his acting skills have remained perfectly intact over the many years he has been in the business. News of the World brings a slightly different perspective to the old western theme by adding in heart, compassion, and melancholy that may move some viewers to tears. I genuinely give this rating a 5/5 stars because of all of the successful factors going into this. I think Tom Hanks was a perfect fit for his role as well as Helena Zengal doing a great acting job especially considering this is her first acting job in any American production. News of the World is a wonderful movie that captures drama, action, history, and love all coming together to make a phenomenal movie.

  COVID coverage around the world          The pandemic has almost completely turned around the lives of virtually everyone in one way or another. While COVID-19 has given us chances to find common ground with many people and has allowed more people to rely on each other, there is a large and steady difference that has occurred between the United States and the rest of the world.
